10 - Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor, Matthew Stover

This particular Star Wars book goes back to the time, right after Return of the Jedi, when Luke, Leia, and Han were roaming the galaxy, cleaning up messes, saving civilizations, and generally being heroes the fledgling New Republic. It was refreshing to read about a time before diplomacy tamed Leia and strangled Han; it was bizarre to read Chewie again. I loved, as always, to read about Wedge, Hobbie, Wes, and the other Rogues. It makes me want to reread the X-Wing books.

I didn't like the dark side of Luke. But then again, I don't want to play Star Wars: The Force Unleashed because you have to start as a Sith character. Suffice it to say I'm not a fan of the Dark. I am all rainbows and light. *sarcasm* Or something like that.

I also don't think I particularly like Stover's writing. One thing I have always loved about Star Wars in general is that the whole universe is kind of clean: there are not really any "Corellian" curses, or such. Occasionally they are alluded to, but never spelled out any more graphically that "you scruffy nerf-herder!". ("Who are you calling scruffy?") However, Stover alludes too much; sometimes he even comes right out and establishes a curse. That I can do without in my favorite alternate universe. Also, he's very technical in a way that most Star Wars novels are not. In my mind, Star Wars has always been a very detailed, well-thought-out character-driven universe. I love the technology, but this seemed almost like he was making stuff up and hoping his readers wouldn't notice that he didn't know exactly what he was talking about since it was masked in techno-babble.

SO: plot - A. Writing - C.
