5 - Three Cups of Tea, Greg Mortenson

This is the slightly incredible and definitely inspiring story of a man who set out to climb K2 (the second highest mountain in the world, located in a remote part of Pakistan) and ended up opening numerous schools, particularly for girls, in some of the most poverty-striken parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

I read the Young Readers version, which is slightly simplified, because I thought I might be able to use it in my classroom. It was excellent! It has sections of full-color pictures of Dr. Greg and his family and friends, as well as a timeline and glossary (very useful for sixth graders). It also has a very cool interview with his daughter, Amira, who was in seventh grade at the time! I definitely want to use it in my classroom.

There is also the original (grown-up) version of the book and a picture book for younger children. This is a cool story and an excellent chance for the kids to read some fascinating nonfiction.
